American Gods Season 2 Episode 6: Donar the Great American Gods, the TV show, is at its best when it does not limit itself to reproduce the plot of the book, and dares to dig deeper in the rich universe and mythology created by Neil Gaiman. This week’s episode did just that by exploring an […]Read more "Life is a Cabaret… Even for Gods: American Gods Season 2 Episode 6"
If the previous episode, The Greatest Story Ever Told, was about Money, this episode is about Death, or more precisely, about what the dead can teach to the living. In terms of the storylines, Laura and Mad Sweeney travel to New Orleans and meet Baron Samedi and Maman Brigitte, Voodoo loas (spirits) in another attempt for Laura to come back from the dead, and for Sweeney to recover his lucky coin. Shadow, still in Cairo, encounters the spirit of Will “Froggie” James, a black man who was lynched in Cairo in 1909 after erroneously being accused of killing a white woman, and who haunts African Americans in town ever since. Finally, we follow Wednesday, Samir and Jinn in their search for a dwarf who can fix and restore to glory his spear Gungnir.Read more "American Gods Season 2 Episode 5: The Ways of the Dead"

After a two year hiatus, which included as much behind the scenes drama as the show itself, American Gods is back. Since you can already read many […]Read more "American Gods Season 2: The War has Begun"
Welcome to our weekly recap of the third and final season of the Leftovers. If we began the season with the Book of Kevin, we ended with the Book of Nora, making clear that, even though the series presented itself as a grand metaphysical mystery, it also was, at its heart, a love story. Do Kevin and Nora end up together? Do we find out what caused the Sudden Departure? Do we figure out what the hell was up with that National Geographic magazine? As HBO wisely warned us in its description of the episode “Nothing is answered. Everything is answered. And then it ends.”Read more "The Leftovers Season 3 Episode 8 Recap: The Book of Nora"
Welcome to our weekly recap of the third and final season of the Leftovers. The end is almost near (only one episode left!) and tonight’s episode offered some important answers to many of our questions. The episode, like International Assassin in season 2, took place mostly in “the other world.” Kevin dies (again) and becomes once more an international assassin, although his mission this time is to stop the end of the world. Does he succeed? Does Kevin really have an identical twin? What’s up with that romance novel? What is the Fisher Protocol? And what does it all mean?!?!?!? If this is not enough, the episode includes some old beloved (well, not really loved) characters, and a pretty funny joke about Justin Theroux’s penis.Read more "The Leftovers Season 3 Episode 7 Recap: The Most Powerful Man in the World (and His Identical Twin Brother)"
Welcome to our weekly recap of the third and final season of the Leftovers. In The Myth of Sisyphus, the French existentialist Albert Camus argued that “there is only one really serious philosophical problem, and that is suicide. Deciding whether or not life is worth living is to answer the fundamental question in philosophy. All […]Read more "The Leftovers Season 3 Episode 6 Recap: “Certified”"
A little recap… There is no other show on TV right now that explores religious issues like HBO’s The Leftovers. The first season, based on Tom Perrotta’s 2011 novel of the same name, and developed for TV by Damon Lindelof (of Lost fame), examined the effects (social, psychological, spiritual) of a Rapture-like event (named the […]Read more "The Leftovers Season 2: Welcome to Paradise?"
